Jazz en Plein Air: Hendrik Meurkens

Join us for the third installment of Jazz en Plein Air, featuring many talented musicians selected by the East End's legendary Richie Siegler, jazz musician and founding director of Escola de Samba BOOM. The evening will feature Hendrik Meurkens Samba Jazz Quartet – Hendrik Meurkens, Harmonica and Vibes; Misha Tsiganov, Piano; Gabriel Espinosa, Bass; Adriano Santos, Drums – playing on the Museum's Mildred C. Brinn Terrace.

Born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, self-taught prodigy Hendrik Meurkens started the path of the musician in his teen years. After having achieved a great command of both the vibraphone and chromatic harmonica, he pursued formal studies at Berklee College in Boston as a vibraphone major. In 1982 he moved to Rio de Janeiro, invited by Mauricio Einhorn, the great Brazilian harmonica player and composer of bossa nova, to immerse himself completely in the country's music styles. Mr. Meurkens' understanding of the Brazilian music vocabulary has since been praised by native Brazilian musicians, and his works are considered as true to this influence as those of a Brazilian composer. Back in Europe, his unique voice on both instruments helped him position himself as an important musician on the European scene. Moving to the U.S. in 1992 after being signed by Concord Records, Mr. Meurkens became a regular of the New York Jazz scene. His recordings for Concord successfully introduced Mr. Meurkens to the global audience and established him as the first major new voice on the Jazz harmonica since Toots Thielemans.

The Golden Pear Café at the Parrish will be serving special food and drinks, including a buffet of BBQ Chicken, Blackened Mahi-Mahi, Slow-Roasted Beef Brisket with Chimichurri Sauce, Coleslaw, Potato Salad, & a Brownie for $22.95, as well as Hebrew National XL Hot Dogs for $4, and $6 Montauk Driftwood Ale, $10 Parrish Sunset Sangria, $12 Wölffer Summer in a Bottle Rosé, and $8 Pinot Grigio.

So come socialize, soak in the scenery, and have a glass of wine, to the sounds of the many talented musicians.

Seating is limited and guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets to enjoy the live music from the terrace and the Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley Foundation Event Lawn.
