Distill Life: Conversation and Spirits Tasting

"You don't have to be a fan of Mad Men to know that cocktails are cool, and really fun. Even better, there are more small-batch distilleries in New York than at any time since Prohibition. And there's a whole world of cocktail recipes and culture we are rediscovering. We have invited three distillers and mixologists to tell you exactly what you need to know about drinking hooch in New York." (Brian Halweil, Edible East End).

Learn about the creative process behind New York-made craft spirits in this program co-presented with Edible East End, and hosted by Editor-in-Chief, Brian Halweil. Panelists include Jason Laan of Sag Harbor Rum, Richard Scoffier, Food and Beverage Director of Honest Man Restaurant Group, and Leslie Merinoff of Owney's NYC Rum in Brooklyn. Tastings will be offered after the talk in the Golden Pear Cafe at the Parrish. Special thanks to promotional partner, Think Local.

Friday Nights are made possible, in part, by the generous support of  Bridgehampton National Bank and The Corcoran Group.

About Sag Harbor Rum: Sag Harbor Rum is five times small-pot distilled from fermented sugar cane juice in Trinidad. Then it is aged at high proof in old american oak bourbon barrels on the east end of Long Island for almost a year. During the aging process it is then lightly infused with hints of vanilla, ginger, coffee as well a number of fruits to give it a smooth finish without adding any sugar or molasses like most rums. The result is a nice amber rum that is flavorful yet subtle enough to not only to be drunk alone but work as a perfect mixer in a number of cocktails. Jason Laan, one of the partners behinds Sag Harbor Rum, started the company in 2012 with the hope of bringing the rum-running tradition back to Long Island. As a life-long rum drinker, he then formed a partnership with Long Island Spirits to bring that dream to reality with a unique flavor we like to call 'Old Whalers Style.'

About Leslie Merinoff and Owney's NYC Rum: Leslie lives for booze.  She is completely consumed by the history, present and future of its production and consumption.  Luckily for us - we're living in a golden age for spirits.  Thanks to the farm to table movement, distilleries are popping up from coast to coast dedicated to producing spirits made from careful and minimal processes that harness the power of really good ingredients.  Leslie is fortunate to work for one of these distilleries - The Noble Experiment in NYC; owned and operated by women dedicated to advancing this golden age of spirits by making a small batch rum with only yeast, NY filtered tap water, and the finest, domestically sourced, Grade A, non GMO molasses money can buy.

About Richard Scoffier: Richard Scoffier is the food and beverage director of the Honest Man establishments which includes: Nick & Toni's, Nick & Toni's Cafe, La Fondita, Rowdy Hall and Townline BBQ.  Scoffier has developed progressive and artisan style cocktail and beverage menus at all properties featuring handcrafted cocktails made with house-infused liquors and homemade shrubs, house made bottled cocktails, cocktails on tap, N20 infusions, an ice program and much more. Richard’s focus always comes down to quality. “There is a sign above (the Owner’s) desk that says “The Restaurant Business is Simple, Simple is Hard”. This couldn’t be more true. One can’t imagine the amount of time we spend searching for and talking about whatever it is you are eating or drinking at our places right now.”
