Writing: The Art of Poetry

The Art of Poetry with Jennifer Senft

Friday, May 19, 10:30 am - 1 pm

Write poems inspired by the Museum collection, building, and landscape. With prompts from instructor Jennifer Senft, explore Japanese haiku, prose poetry, and pantoum.

During the workshop, Jennifer will describe each poetic form and share published examples with the group. Whenever possible, she will also share audio of the author reading his or her work. We will then view the Parrish collection, which serves as a writing prompt, write, then return to the studio to read and discuss everyone’s poetry. After a short break—some tea, a stretch, a chat—we will do the same for the next poetic form.

Jennifer Senft holds an MFA in Writing and Literature from Stony Brook Southampton, an MA in Psychology from NYU, and a BFA in Cinema Studies from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. She teaches in the English and Humanities departments of Suffolk County Community College, works as a private writing instructor and editor, and leads local classes on writing and literature. Her work has appeared numerous publications, and her short story “Prison Visit” was nominated for a 2014 Pushcart Prize.
