Four American Composers: John Cage Film Screening

Director: Peter Greenaway                 60 minutes

This excerpt from Peter Greenaway's documentary project Four American Composers (1983) profiles avant-garde legend John Cage. Made for television and based on a series of musical performances commemorating Cage's seventieth birthday, Greenaway's film provides an intimate portrait of the composer through footage of his performances intercut with interviews with Cage himself. Peter Greenaway's singular filmmaking style provides insight into Cage's training as a painter, and how his interest in linguistics and philosophy influenced his work.

Composer Carter Burwell will introduce the film. The screening will be followed by remarks from Laura Kuhn, Executive Director of The John Cage Trust.

This event is co-presented with The Watermill Center. Special thanks to The John Cage Trust.

Friday Nights are made possible by the generous support of The Corcoran Group. Public Funding provided by Suffolk County.
